Spotlight on the BERLIN LIONS CLUB
The Berlin Lions Club was formed on February 4, 1954. Our club has 32 members. All clubs are under the umbrella of Lions Clubs International. Our mission: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace & promote international understanding. The Lions’ motto is: “We Serve.”
Most people associate the Lions with the collection of used eyeglasses, one of many things we do. One of our containers for used eyeglasses is located near the Shop Rite store in Berlin. It is a former street corner US Mailbox painted yellow. Thanks to you, it is our largest collection spot.
Our fundraisers support camps & athletic programs for blind children & adults, eye research, hearing & seeing eye dogs, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, etc. Our amblyopic program in local daycares & schools helps to detect eye problems in their early stages, especially “lazy eye”. The school nurses advise the parents of our findings.
The Berlin Lions partnered with the NJ Masons from 2007-2009, sharing costs to provide school children in Berlin Boro & Twp. with the Child Identification Program (CHIP). It has four parts: photo, video interview, fingerprinting & tooth impressions that retain DNA. Fingerprinting was done by the Berlin/West Berlin Police in the Boro & Twp. Schools. The NJ Masons provided their video equipment/CDs’s & toothprints.
Each August the Verizon Telecom Pioneers Sports Jamboree (Special Olympics) is held at the Pine Hill Scout Reservation. We sponsor two participants & provide the Camden Sight Mobile. Eye testing by an eye doctor is offered at no cost to anyone at the event.
New coats & winter flannels were provided by our club and delivered to the Camden County American Red Cross, Berlin Headstart Daycare, area churches & within South Jersey to families in need.
Each Thanksgiving several turkeys are donated to area schools and given to needy families in holiday baskets provided by the schools. We donate & collect food for St Vincent de Paul’s pantry & to GIFT, God’s Interfaith Table, a local interdenominational food pantry. Toys are also given to GIFT during the holidays for area children. Santa Claus is helped by us, donating 800+ candy canes. He & his elves give them to elementary grade students at Berlin Community, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and John F Kennedy Schools. Both Eastern & Overbrook High Schools each get a $300 scholarship from our Club in May.
So, now you know some of what the Berlin Lions do….this is just a small sampling of what we do for our community.
Look for our car in the Berlin Fourth of July parade & stop by our annual hot dog stand at the Berlin Park afterwards. Hot dogs are $1.00 each; bottled water is $1.00; and sodas are just $.50. What a bargain!!
Membership in the Lions organization is by invitation only. If you, a friend or family member are interested to join the Berlin Lions Club, please call 856-768-1825.
