History Of Berlin Township


The history of the Township of Berlin dates back to the Village of Long-a-Coming. Its area was a part of the village. The name West Berlin is documented back to 1885. West Berlin was part of Gloucester Township, Gloucester County. When Camden County was created, West Berlin was taken from Gloucester Township and became part of Waterford Township, Camden County.
J.B. Boulton, a real estate man and land developer came to West Berlin, NJ. Realizing its potential, he formed the West Berlin Land and Building Company, making himself General Manager. West Berlin land and Building Company invested heavily in ground in West Berlin.

In February 1889, Messrs, Newlin & Sons, landscape photographers from Arch Street, Philadelphia were hired to come to West Berlin with their apparatus and photograph the place from several different locations. They produced seven very handsome pictures of West Berlin. In 1897, J.B. Boulton convinced a relative, David English, a surveyor and landscaper to come to West Berlin, survey the town and make the map plans.

J.B. Boulton operated was General Manager of West Berlin Land and Building Company. Its main office was located at # 8 North 2nd Street, Philadelphia, Pa. This was also the location of J.B. Bolton's shoe store.

J.B. Boulton opened a real estate office, a publishing office and a store over by the West Berlin Railroad Station on Union Avenue. In the West Berlin Real Estate Journal, which J.B. Boulton published weekly, he widely advertised the maps showing the lots available in West Berlin. Thomas B. Banes became the General Agent for the sale of building lots in West Berlin.

J.B. Boulton published a second paper called the "Enterprise". The Enterprise newspaper of September 17, 1892 states "The Enterprise", West Berlin, NJ published weekly, Charles P. Jennings, and Atlantic Avenue, West Berlin, opposite the station. J.B. Boulton published a third paper called the "West Berlin Journal" that he also published weekly.

Where the Franklin Avenue Bridge now stands was called "Johnson's Crossing". At Johnson's Crossing there was a little flag lean to station. This was replaced when a railroad station was built at Union and Atlantic Avenues named "West Berlin Station". The West Berlin Station was a shipping and receiving, ticket and mail station. The West Berlin Journal dated August 28, 1890 is evidence that West Berlin had three stations, West Berlin, Haddon Avenue and Milford Road.

Loggerhead is a stream and the beginning of the Egg Harbor River. The beginning of the Mullica River is located off of the Cooper Road in Berlin Township. Loggerhead is located on Minck Avenue, West Berlin NJ.

The West Berlin Journal dated February 8, 1889 advertised that West Berlin NJ is the healthiest place in the world with the exception of Southern California, according to Prof. Cook's geographical survey. West Berlin NJ has the healthiest climate in the world as it is situated in the center of the wonderful health belt extending through southern New Jersey, this making it free from all contagious diseases. One day spent in the open air in West Berlin NJ would cure the worst cough ever known without medication.

A booklet called "Annual Report Board of Education Waterford Township" was published. The Annual Report Board of Education 1898-1899, March 1st to June 30th close of the school year, states the following: J. Curtis Davis, President of the Board. The nine schools were:

#3 Kresson
#4 Berlin
#5 West Berlin
#6 Atco
#7 Louden
#8 Waterford
#9 Parkdale

The #5 West Berlin school was a two-room structure situated on Bate Avenue, West Berlin, NJ. It had a classroom upstairs and a classroom downstairs. Elizabeth C. Chew and Sallie C. Warlon were the teachers, Anne Bate, the janitor and H.I. Miller, supplies.

The Annual Report Board of Education, Waterford Township 1900-1901 states - Joseph L. Walker, President # 10 School named "Snowflake" located on Crowfoot Road opened.

In 1904 the first Catholic Church was built on Bether and Warren Avenues West Berlin NJ. It was named Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and was serviced by Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Camden. Reverend Peter Paris was the first resident pastor.

Reverend Paris performed the first Baptism in 1905 for Angelo Tierno. The first marriage performed by Reverend Paris was Peter Juliano to Velescha Veranica Kynast, on August 26, 1907.

A West Berlin Building & Loan Association was organized on January 5, 1891 with 10 shares subscribed and organized on January 5, 1891 with 10 shares subscribed and increased to 142 shares in three months. It was incorporated in 1891 under the laws of New Jersey. Jacob L. Bate was President, Howard Miller, Vice President, Harry Noelle, Secretary, Joshua E. Borton of Camden, Solicitor.

Haddon Avenue was mentioned as early as 1721 and undoubtedly was an Old Indian Trail. Haddon Avenue is the main road running through West Berlin Township.
