About West Berlin Township
History of West Berlin Township
Originally a portion of the Township of Waterford, the Township was created by an act of legislation on April 11, 1910. On April 26, 1927, the Borough of Berlin seceded from the Township. Today the Township covers and area of 3.27 square miles.

Presently
Our town is approximately 3 square miles in size with a population of about 5,300 people and growing due to our new Senior Housing Development called" Montebello" which will consist of 348 new single family homes. In addition, we have "Taunton Run" a senior housing that provides 150 one floor garden apartment units. The township also has a commercial element that provides a ratable base that helps to maintain a stable tax rate. The commercial ratable base is comprised of several large chain stores such as Sears, Wal-Mart,Shop-Rite, Home Depot and Staples. We also have several
successful corporate and industrial parks. In additions, we have a pre-school through eighth grade premier school system which was one of the chosen few for the "Renaissance Lighthouse District" located within two neighborhood buildings. There also are several churches of varying denominations.

Municipal Building Updates

On November 7, 2006 our Municipal Building sustained severe structural damage that forced the closure of the building permanently. It appears that the structural damage is a result of old age and deterioration that forced a portion of the main structural beam to collapse and fall into the building. As a result of this incident a structural analysis of the building was preformed by our Construction Code Official and Registered Professional Engineers.

Under the New Jersey Building Code the building was warrant as "Dangerous" with potential safety hazards and potential liability. Due to the closure of the building The following department and services have been relocated:

* Police Department and Court Administrator / Violations Bureau have    been relocated to the end of Pine Avenue. (Senior Citizens Building)

* Tax Department (Tax Collector and Tax Assessor) has been relocated   to temporary office trailer next to the vacant Municipal Building.

* Land Use Office (Planning, Zoning, Construction and Building Code   Official and Property Maintenance) has been relocated to temporary   office trailer next to the vacant Municipal Building.

* Our Municipal Clerks Office as well as other administrative offices are    now located at 176 Bate Avenue. (Yellow House next to the Trailers)

* All Council Meetings, Planning and Zoning Meetings are being held at   the Huster Building (Board of Education) located at Grove Avenue.

Our Options are limited with the building. The estimates to repair this building far exceed the value of the building. Mayor and Council are working very hard with various Township professionals to pursue funding alternatives as well as looking at possible additional sites to help replace our municipal building. In the interim, the Township is committed to keep Municipal services and operations functioning at the highest possible level. We will continue to keep everyone informed about our plans for a New Municipal Building.
